Scallop Shell Information

A mixture of King and Queen scallop shells.We supply two types of scallop shells:

King Scallop Shells
These range from 11cm - 14cm wide and have various colours and natural staining on the outside and mainly white on the inside. Our King scallop shells are from the waters around the Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We cannot provide King scallop shells smaller then 11cm wide as it is illegal to catch and land them in our waters.

Queen Scallop Shells
These are 4cm - 6cm wide. They generally have a reddish/brown colour on the outside and are mainly white on the inside. Our Queen scallop shells are from the waters around the Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.


All our scallop shells are sterilised in food friendly chemicals, approved by the Food Standards Agency.

Other names for our type of scallop are; Escallop, King Scallop, Clam and Cocquel.



Scallop shell history

The scallop shell was the indented shell and emblem of St James. This was originally worn to signify that the wearer had made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St James in Compostella, Spain. Some time later, it was positioned on the shield to show that the carrier or an ancestor had been a Crusader or completed a long pilgrimage. It was also said to be a bearing for those who had made long trips over the oceans or who have had a significant naval command and achieved great victories.
